The Spice House

The Spice House has three brick and mortar stores: in Chicago, Evanston, and Milwaukee. They are currently open for curbside pick-up and mail order. They sell an extensive selection of spices, dried herbs, and essences from allspice to vanilla. The Spice House grinds and blends spices in small, weekly batches to ensure premium quality and freshness. You can also buy their proprietary spice blends to recreate the flavors of Africa, the Mideast, Europe, India, East Asia, Latin America, or the Caribbean. Recently they introduced a new kind of packaging, the flat pack, which holds approximately a half-cup and always ships for free, no minimum order.

A friend asked which mail-order spice company I liked the best, the Spice House, Penzey’s, or Savory Spice. I’ve used and like all three, but the Spice House is the clear winner. Their product is fresher and the spice blends taste closer to my memories of foods enjoyed while traveling in the region. Mail-order is very convenient, a lifesaver during the pandemic, but how I miss the tidal wave of aroma that hits you as soon as you open the door to the shop! One day, surely, we’ll be flooded with those scents again.
